KÖNIG WIEN is pleased to present MEDIUM a new exhibition of works by Alicja Kwade The show comprises sculptures a multi-media installation and new hanging mobiles each of which deal in their own ways with aspects of the perspective of humans vis-à-vis the universe 📅 23 SEPTEMBER – 30 OCTOBER 2022📍 KÖNIG WIENKwade continues her investigation of the nature and substance of the world both as it is and as we experience it measuring impossible moments of equilibrium between the two What passes between planetary motion and immediate perception is an entire field that Kwade’s work both alludes to and itself produces all of which depends on the radical contingency of human experience – that which is could just as well be otherwise The PRINCIPIUM sculptures demonstrate the migration of elements that connect through MEDIUM as they are spiral columns composed of bronze casts of iPhones; essentially a modern medium for constructing and understanding reality roughly portioned to the height of specific persons The shape of these sculptures recalls the double helix form of human DNA that was discovered in the 1950s but their spirals are also spatial demonstrations of an infinity of time without a clear origin or destination no clear beginning or end With their patina the stacked phones recall ancient artefacts the encrusted layering of time transposed into the casts of a modern device the technological apparatus a fitting analogue for the DNA of a particular culture predictors of a future like genetic code that is geared toward a horizon determined by their programmed protocols Photo: © Simon Veres #alicjakwade

presents TAUMEL a solo exhibition by Norbert Bisky The painter is known for large-format paintings for his exhibition in the CHAPEL of St Agnes he has managed to expand the dimensions of the space to the maximum A work measuring nearly seven by seven metres completely fills the ceiling of the former chapel except for a few centimetres necessary for installation purposes Due to the unique architecture of the CHAPEL the first impression of the exhibition viewers will have is of an entirely empty space Only once gazes are turned upward does the full force of what is pouring down on viewers reveal itself: it's raining people Alluding to earlier traditions of European Baroque church decoration the painting effectively erases the ceiling of the room by opening a view onto an imagined sky This unique spatial device was meant to visualize the Christian idea of a vertical line on which the drama of a life was measured – between salvation and damnation Employing the motif of the Falling Man Bisky returns once again to a figure symptomatic of the present who stands for the loss of control and the fear of the collapse of familiar systems In the centre of the painting a man writhes upside down – a reference to Bisky's former teacher Georg Baselitz – though it is entirely unclear whether he is floating or falling frozen in an in-between state The other figures in the painting are also jumping flying or falling in a baffling multiplicity of perspectives Falling dice circling birds of prey and collapsing buildings give further clues to the situation in which these wildly tumbling characters find themselves Something is happening to them that they cannot control The outcome is uncertain but whatever happens there will be winners and losers the hunters and the hunted Bisky skilfully avoids falling into the role of admonisher His art does not comment on how things should be It compresses only that which is © Text Diana Weis© Images Roman März @koeniggalerie

This week is your last chance to see TOTALITY a solo exhibition by Bosco Sodi in the Vienna gallery 📅 until 28 AUGUST📍 KÖNIG WIENThese recent paintings are the outcome of an intensively physical process in which experimentation and chance play an important role Laying the canvas horizontally Sodi builds up layers of his paint mixture by hand over several days giving the works a sculptural quality He stops once the surface begins to crack surrendering the process to time and the elements Sometimes he turns the canvas to use gravity as a latent force as the work dries and fissures appear Formed as a result of environmental conditions over time there is an alchemy of sorts as the artist captures the changing and atmospheric qualities of light air and weather in the paintings #boscosodi

Monira Al Qadiri’s new public sculpture DEVONIAN installed on the Riverside Terrace of the Southbank Centre in London is a large circular work composed of thin semi-transparent images of ancient sea creatures on a solid base of ocean blue 📅 5 AUGUST - 6 NOVEMBER📍 RIVERSIDE TERRACE | LEVEL 2 | LONDONThe work’s title refers to the classification of a period of life and rock formation that occurred nearly 400 million years ago The significance of the Devonian era for the artist is both its specificity to nearby Devon England – for which the period is named – and the fact that the deposits of the animals that once populated the oceans in the Devonian are today used in petroleum production creating both plastic and fuel by-products DEVONIAN is the second of three annual commissions presented by the Hayward Gallery in partnership with the Bagri Foundation to bring new public art commissions by artists from or inspired by Asia and its diaspora to the Southbank Centre Supported by Images Rob Harris #moniraalqadiri

We are pleased to present the solo exhibition MIRRORS AND THINGS by renowned German painter Matthias Weischer He is one of the most important representatives of figurative painting emerging from Leipzig where classical perspective and large-format realist pictures where still taught in art schools in the former GDR in the decades following the reunification of Germany For his exhibition in Seoul Weischer created twelve new oil on canvas works 📅 1 SEPTEMBER – 9 OCTOBER 2022📍 KÖNIG SEOULEach of the paintings in Seoul depicts an interior space where straight lines of sight are subject to radical multiplication often with oblique entry points into the picture’s compositional expanse These scenes are populated with objects such as everyday wares and other artworks that continue the vertiginous play between the flat surface of the painting and the optical recession into an illusory depth of field This tension between real and depicted space is typical of Weischer’s work and represents one of the most significant contributions to the wider field of painting in Germany #matthiasweischer
